Altair’s Vertical Tasting Earns Top Scores in Decanter

Throughout 2024, Altair embarked on a global tour to present a vertical tasting celebrating its legacy—20 vintages that mark its journey. One of the destinations was London, United Kingdom, where Decanter’s South America Editor, Inés Salpico, had the opportunity to taste 18 selected vintages curated by the brand’s winemaking team. The exclusive setting was 67 Pall Mall. In her feature, Salpico highlighted the oenological evolution of this iconic wine over the last two decades.

Salpico revisited the history of San Pedro Cachapoal Andes winery, noting:

To a large extent, Altair’s journey mirrors that of Chilean fine wine as a whole: from a fascination with classical foreign paradigms to the recognition of a potential for difference and local identity – all backed by robust technical ability.

The pinnacle of this tasting was the current vintage, Altair 2021, which earned an impressive 95 points, with the following tasting note:

“Notable purity and elegance in this Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Cabernet Franc. The fruit is round and well defined; red cherry, plum, mulberry and cassis are cloaked in blueberry leaf and dried mint. All supported by firm but refreshingly mineral tannins. Subtle tail of white pepper and vanilla.”

The first vintage presented, from 2003, was described by Salpico as:

“Classical and characterful, with unapologetic savouriness – very expressive of consultant winemaker Pascal Chatonnet’s style. Even with smoky herbaceousness in the foreground, this retains an impressive amount of primary fruit 21 years on, with cherry, cranberry and dark plum mingling with their dried counterparts. Tobacco leaves, dark chocolate, dried thyme and coriander seeds add depth and length. Very soft, fine-grained tannins.”

We invite you to explore the captivating oenological journey of Altair in Decanter’s article, which also features the scores of all 18 vintages tasted to date. The editor described the tasting as:

A vertical [that] showed a clear evolution, remarkable consistency and increasing technical precision. This translates into a particularly well-presented structure that supports the character of each vintage and the contribution of all the blending components ever more successfully.
